The only inscribed stone portrait of Emperor Ashoka has been found at Kanaganahalli (Kanaganahalli is about 3 km from Sannati, an important Buddhist site, it is on the left bank of the Bhima river in, Gulbarga District in Karnataka). In 1993 a team of archeologistssurveyed Sannati, Karnataka, and the most dramatic evidence came from Kanagahalli. The discoveries at the site included a broken relief sculpture showing a king and queen flankaed by female attendants. An inscription in Brahmi letter read “Ranyo Ashoka” (King Ashoka), leaving no doubt about the centralfigure.
