Kalinga is not listed as one of the sixteen mahajanpadas in the pre-Mauryan period as the battle of Kalinga was fought in 265 BC by Ashoka after which he renounced violence for the rest of his life and turned to Buddhism.Ashoka's 13th Rock Edict describes theKalinga war vividly. Mahajanapadas were formed sixth century BC onward. These were Kasi, Anga, Magadha, Vajji, Malla, Chedi, Vatsa, Kuru, Panchala,Matsya, Surasena, Assaka, Avanti, Gandhara, Kamboja and Kosala.
