The Vice President’s election is slightly different from that of the election of the President as the members of state legislatures are not involved in the electoral college but the nominated members of both the houses are part of the electoral college for the vice-presidential election. * The Vice President holds office for a period of five years. * He/She may be re-elected any number of times. * Although the office may be terminated earlier by death, resignation/removal, the Constitution doesn’t provide a mechanism of succession to the Vice President’s Office in the event of an extraordinary vacancy, apart from re-election. * Although the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha can perform the duties of Vice President as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha in such an event. As in the President’s case, in order to be qualified to be elected as Vice President, a person must: * Be a citizen of India * Have completed more than thirty-five years of age * Not hold any office of profit
