In 1906, Gandhiji led a campaignin Transvaal (not in Cape Town) against the ordinance on compulsory registration and passes for Indians. He was instrumental in the formation of the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) on 22nd August, 1894, which marked the birth of the first permanent political organisation to strive to maintain and protect the rights of Indians in South Africa.
