The category of 'Overseas Citizens of India' was entered in the Citizenship Act of India through an amendment in the year 2003. On the recommendations of a High Level Committee on Indian Diaspora, the Government of India decided to register Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) of a certain category, as has been specified in Section 7A of the Citizenship Act, 1955 as Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cardholders. Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) of certain categories who migrated from India and acquired citizenship of a foreign country, other than Pakistan and Bangladesh, are eligible to be granted an OCI as long as their home countries allow dual citizenship in some form or the other under their local laws.
