Discuss the role played by horticulture in the direction of rural development in India.
Solution:  
Horticultural is an important sector for potential diversification and value addition in agriculture. The period of 1991-2003 is known as Golden Revolution because during this period, the planned investment in horticulture became highly productive.
Role played by horticulture in the direction of rural development
(i) Important for food and nutrition : Horticultural crops play a vital role in providing food and nutrition.
(ii) Employment : It provides employment to all kinds of farmers in the off season months.
(iii) Increase in Income : It increases income of the farmers as horticulture can be carried out at a very minimal costs and such products provide supplementation to the farmers income.
(iv) Break in debt trap : Horticulture in off season provides as a source of cutting expenses during gestation period.
