Consider the following statements in connection with the functions of the blood vessels marked A and B in the diagram of a human heart as shown.

(i) Blood vessel A - It carries carbon dioxide rich blood to the lungs.
(ii) Blood vessel B - It carries oxygen rich blood from the lungs.
(iii) Blood vessel B - Left atrium relaxes as it receives blood from this blood vessel.
(iv) Blood vessel A - Right atrium has thick muscular wall as it has to pump blood to this vessel.The correct statements are

(i) and (ii) only
(ii) and (iii) only
(ii), (iii) and (iv)
(i), (ii) and (iii)

Solution:

In the given figure, Blood Vessel A is the pulmonary artery and blood vessel B is the pulmonary vein. Both pulmonary artery and pulmonary veins are exception to the standard rule of artery and vein carrying oxygenated and deoxygenated blood respectively because in the given figure, pulmonary vein carries oxygenated or oxygen rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium that relaxes to receive the blood from this blood vessel whereas pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs.
