(a) Explain any two methods that were used by the Europeans for the recruitment of the indentured labours.

(b) How did the 'small pox' prove as the most powerful weapon of the Spanish conquerors in the mid-sixteenth century? Explain.
Solution:  
(a) Two methods used by the Europeans for the recruitment of indentured labourers were:
(i) They imposed heavy taxes on the people which could be paid only by working for wages on plantation and mines.
(ii) They also modified the inheritance laws so that a large number of people were displaced from land and had to work on plantations for their livelihood.
OR
(b) The Spanish conquerors reached America in the sixteenth century and started their efforts to gain control over the land.
(a) They had powerful weapons but the most powerful one which helped them in conquering was smallpox. This disease spread to the native people and as they had no immunity against it, they were not able to cope with it.
(b) Most of the native people died due to smallpox and this process made it very easy for the Spanish conquerors to gain control over their land.
