Distinguish between the following pairs of compounds using the reagent given in the bracket.

Dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sulphuric acid. (using lead nitrate solution)

Solution:

Dil. HCl with Pb(NO3)2 gives an insoluble white ppt of PbCl2 (Lead II chloride) which is soluble in hot water. Whereas dil H2SO4 with Pb(NO3)2, it forms a white insoluble ppt of PbSO4 .
