the distance between the cliff and the observer on the ship.
Solution:
The time taken by sound to travel from observer to cliff and then from cliff to the man on sea shore = 3 seconds.
Let the distance between the cliff and the observer on the ship = 'x ' metres.
∴ Distance travelled by sound
= ( x + x + 640 ) m
= ( 2 x + 640 ) m
Speed = 320 m ∕ s
time = 3 seconds
∵ Distance = Speed × time
∴ ( 2 x + 640 ) = 320 × 3
2 x + 640 = 960
2 x = 960 − 640
2 x = 320
x =
= 160 m
Let the distance between the cliff and the observer on the ship = '
