Comment on the thermodynamic stability of N O ( g ) , given
N 2 ( g ) +
O 2 ( g ) → N O ( g ) ; Δ r H ° = 90 k J m o l − 1
N O ( g ) +
O 2 ( g ) → N O 2 ( g ) ; Δ r H ° = - 74 k J m o l − 1
Solution:
Since Δ r H ° is +ve, i.e., enthalpy of formation of NO is positive, therefore NO is unstable. But Δ r H ° is negative for the formation of N O 2 . So, N O 2 is stable.
