For M 2 + ∕ M and M 3 + ∕ M 2 + systems the E° values for some metals are as follows
Use this data to comment upon
(i) the stability ofF e 3 + in acid solution as compared to that of C r 3 + or M n 3 + and
(ii) the ease with which iron can be oxidised as compared to a similar process for either chromium or manganese metal.
| –0.9 V | | –0.4 V |
| –1.2 V | | +1.5 V |
| –0.4 V | | +0.8 V |
(i) the stability of
(ii) the ease with which iron can be oxidised as compared to a similar process for either chromium or manganese metal.
Solution:
(i) From the E° values for M n 3 + ∕ M n 2 + for Cr, Mn and Fe, it is veryclear that F e 3 + is more stable than M n 3 + in an acidic medium, whereas lessstable than Cr3+ because of the higher reduction potential in comparison toC r 3 + ∕ C r 2 + and lower reduction potential than M n 3 + ∕ M n 2 + .
(ii) Reduction potential forM n 3 + ∕ M n is most negative and therefore,it will be most easily oxidised and ease of getting oxidised will beM n > C r > F e .
(ii) Reduction potential for
