RDS automated backups allow point in time recovery to any point within the retention period
down to a second. When automated backups are turned on for your DB Instance, Amazon RDS
automatically performs a full daily snapshot of your data (during your preferred backup
window) and captures transaction logs (as updates to your DB Instance are made). Automated
backups are enabled by default and data is stored on S3 and is equal to the size of the DB
EC2 instances using EBS volumes can be backed up by creating a snapshot of the EBS volume
Amazon S3 objects are replicated across multiple facilities. You can also archive data onto
Amazon Glacier and use versioning to maintain copies of older versions of objects
