In 1917 Gandhiji was requested to look into the problems of the farmers in the context of indigo planters of Champaran in Bihar.
The European planters had been forcing the peasants to grow indigo on 3/20 part of the total land (called tinkathia system).
Gandhi travelled across the district to different villages, meeting farmers and taking note of their sufferings and complaints against the forced indigo cultivation.
His protest led to the abolishing of the exploitative tinkathia system.
The victory at Champaran established Gandhiji in India’s struggle against the British raj.
This was the first Civil Disobedience Movement by Gandhi Ji in India.
