The strait is named after Robert Palk, who was a Governor of Madras (1755–1763) during the Company Raj period.
The Gulf of Mannar is home to thousands of species of flora and fauna and is known as one of the richest coastal regions in India.
The corals, sharks, dugongs, dolphins, and sea cucumber.
It is 53-80 kilometres wide, studded with a chain of low islands and reef shoals that are collectively called Adam’s Bridge.
