The writ of prohibition is issued by a higher court to a lower court to prevent the lower court from exceeding its jurisdiction.
The writ of mandamus is issued by a court to a public official asking him to perform his responsibilities that he has refused to perform.
The writ of certiorari is issued by the supreme court or high courts for the reexamination of an action of a lower court.
The writ of quo warranto is issued against a person who claims or usurps a public office.
