Taxila also known as Takshashila, flourished from 600 BC to 500AD, in the kingdom of Gandhar. It was a great learning centre of higher education. Vedas, buddhist literature, medical science, archery, military training, etc were taught. Under Mauryas, Taxila became a great Buddhist centre of learning. Ashoka built roads to enhance trade, the most notable being the long road from Patliputra to Taxila.
