पहली शताब्दी ई. में भारतीय संस्कृति दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया में भी पहुँची लेकिन बौद्ध धर्म के माध्यम से नहीं। ( अपवाद-सिर्फ बर्मा/म्यांमार में ही बौद्ध धर्म ( थेरवाद ) का प्रसार हुआ) बर्मा को छोड़कर अन्य देशों में भारतीय संस्कृति का प्रसार मुख्यतया ब्राह्मणीय धर्म के जरिए हुआ। भारतीय शासकों ने वियतनाम (चंपा), कम्बोज/कंपूचिया (कंबोडिया) एवं लाओस तथा इण्डोनेशिया में अपने राज्यों का विस्तार करके वहाँ साम्राज्य स्थापित किया। कंपूचिया और चंपा में छठी सदी ई. में शैव शासकों ने शासन किया। यहाँ के शासकों ने यहाँ विश्व विख्यात स्थापत्य कला के तहत मंदिरों एवं गुफाओं का निर्माण कराया। दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया में स्थित कुछ प्रमुख स्थापत्य केन्द्र निम्न है। (i) सबसे विशाल बौद्ध मंदिर भारत में नहीं बल्कि इंडोनेशिया के बोरोबुदुर में है, यह संसार का सबसे बड़ा बौद्ध मंदिर है (ii) कंपूचिया/कंबोज/कम्बोडिया के अंकोरवाट का मंदिर बोरोबुदुर के मंदिर से भी बड़ा है। मध्यकाल में निर्मित होने पर भी इसकी तुलना मिस्रियों और यूनानियों की उत्कृष्टतम कलाकृतियों से की जा सकती है। इस मंदिर की दीवारों पर रामायण एवं महाभारत की कहानियाँ उभड़ी हुई मूर्तियों में अंकित हैं।
