It is observed at the beginning of the month of Tai according to the Tamil solar calendar, usually around January 14
This is dedicated to the Hindu sun god(the Surya) and corresponds to Makar Sankranti.
1. The first day of Pongal is called Bhogi Pongal. 2. The second day of Pongal is called Thail Pongal. 3. The third day of Pongal is called Mattu Pongal. 4. The fourth day of Pongal is called Kaanum Pongal.
