The Kargil War was an armed conflict that took place between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999.
It is also referred to as "Operation Vijay" , which was the name of the Indian operation to clear the Kargil sector.
Kargil War took place in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, along the Line of Control.
The cause of the war was the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers disguised as Kashmiri militants into position on the Indian side of the LoC.
On $3^{rd}$ May 1999, Pakistan started this war, when it had infiltrated into the high altitudes in the rocky mountainous region of Kargil with around 5000soldiers and captured it.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 26th July every year to commemorate the victory of the Indian soldiers over the Pakistani troops.
