(*) Poto Sardar belonged to the Ho Adivasi tribe of Jharkhand. He led the Ho resistance movement against the British army in the Singhbhum area during 1836-37 (Tribal Movements in Jharkhand, 1857-2007 by Asha Mishra, Chittaranjan Kumar Paty, p.21 and The Politics of Belonging in India: Becoming Adivasi edited by Daniel J. Rycrof t , Sangeeta Dasgupta, p.86). The Ho resistance suffered from the absence of a centralized leadership. Poto Sardar and his closest aides — Nara Ho, Bora Ho, Pandua Ho, Debi Ho, Budaie Ho and Bhugni Ho — were, however, captured and sentenced to death (The Telegraph, Calcutta, 3 February 2004).
