The endomembrane system is based on the fundamental property of membranes to form new membranes. The organelles, such as endoplasmic reticulum (ER), Golgi complex, lysosomes and vacuoles, that constitute the endomembrane system form a dynamic, integrated network and facilitate transport of substances into and out of the cell through membrane bound transport vesicles. The peroxisomes, chloroplast and mitochondria are not considered as part of endomembrane system as they are not coordinated with the system’s components.
