Jaundice is a condition that occurs due to a malfunction in the liver.
The condition is characterized by yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes which is due to an increase in the amount of bilirubin in the blood.
Bilirubin is a byproduct of the natural destruction and breakdown of the red blood cells and it is the liver that metabolizes and excretes this product along with bile.
When there is a disruption in this metabolism, there is an increase in the amount of bilirubin in the blood which leads to jaundice.
Jaundice is not a disease in itself but a sign of some other underlying problem.
