Chandrashekhar Azad was born on 23rd July 1906 in Bhavra village of Madhya Pradesh.
He joined the non-cooperation movement at the age of 15 and was arrested because he participated in the movement.
When produced by the magistrate, he proudly announced his name as ‘Azad’, his father’s name as ‘Swatantrata’ and his place of dwelling as ‘Jail’.
It was then given the name ‘Azad’.
He was disappointed when Gandhi withdrew the non-cooperation movement owing to the violence at Chauri Chaura.
He joined the Hindustan Republican Association after the suspension of the non-cooperation movement.
