(C) The Chipko movement was a forest conservation movement in India where people embraced the trees to prevent them from being cut down. It began in April 1973 in Reni village of Chamoli district,Uttarakhand and went on to become a rallying point for many future environmental movements all over the world.It created a precedent for starting of non-violent protest in India. One of the prominent Chipko leaders, Gandhian Sunderlal Bahuguna, took a 5,000-kilometre trans-Himalaya foot march in 1981–83, spreading the Chipko message to a far greater area.
