  Air Defence Identification Zones (ADIZ) serve as buffer airspace for countries, extending in some cases beyond territorial waters. It is the prerogative of littoral states to determine how they should respond to civilian or military aircraft entering an ADIZ. India has marked six such zones hugging its coastline, with stringent clearance requirements for all aircraft entering them. Beijing must also now contend with its increasingly vocal nationalist constituency that has been demanding counter measures against violating aircraft. The Chinese spokespersons’s clarification that these zones do not aim at any specific country or target, nor do they constitute a threat to any country or region, is a welcome measure
