Solution:
Let the average expenditure be Rs x.
Expenditure of 12 persons = Rs (12 × 40) = Rs 480
Expenditure of the 13th person = Rs (x + 15)
∴ (x + 15) + 480 = 13x
x + 15 + 480 = 13x
495 = 12x
41.25 = x
Thus, total money spent = Rs 13x = Rs 13 × 41.25 = Rs 536.25
