The Planning Commission was first set up in India in March 1950 and Jawaharlal Nehru was its first Chairman.
In India, Planning derives its objectives and social premises from the Directive Principles of State Policy.
The objective behind setting it up was to promote a rapid rise in the standard of living of the people in the country by efficiently exploiting the resources of the country.
