(2) Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, nicknamed Badshah Khanor Sarhadi Gandhi, is known as ‘Frontier Gandhi’. He was a Pashtun independence activist against the rule of the British Raj in the North-West Frontier Province (now part of Afghanistan). He termed this army the Khudai Khidmatgar, the servants of Allah. The volunteers of Khudai Khidmatgar movement were also known as “Surkho Posh” or “Red shirts”. In 1987 he became the first person who won Bharat Ratna without being an Indian national.
