Stromboli, a small island north of Sicily, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and famous for its normally small, but regular explosions. Standing at 926 m above sea level, it is referred to as the ‘Lighthouse of the Mediterranean’. It has been erupting continuously since 1932, with the last major eruption occurring in April 2009.
