For many decades scientists believed that only energy releasing process could be occured by own accord, it might be due to decrease in energy. But some energy absorbing process yet occurred spontaneously e.g. melting of ice, evaporationof water. This led to need of researching another driving force that affects the spontaneity. This factor is known as entropy change. Entropy is thermodynamic state function, that is related with the randomness.
