In the Battle of Swally (1612) the British fought against the Portuguese. The battle took place on November 29-30, 1612 at the coast of Suvali, a village near the Surat in Gujarat State. The English East India Company was also persuaded by this conflict to construct a small navy to protect its commercial interests from other European nations as well as pirates.
